Wee Bit Wednesday

{one} how often do you do laundry?
Once a week, or once every two weeks if I go out of town for the weekend (to visit Justin in Dallas or to MD Anderson in Houston).

{two} what is your favorite type of cookie?
Chocolate chip with crushed walnuts

{three} what would you do with an extra $2000 per month?
Right now, put it towards my trip to India. But if I was not going, I would pay for my parents to extend their back porch.

{four} what was/is your favorite subject in school?
Too many to choose! In grad school, I loved Social Work in a Global Setting and Advanced Policy. In undergrad I loved Calculus 2, Victorian Literature (I majored in English), and all my Anthropology courses. Haha, can you tell I was a bit of a drifter?

{five} have you ever ridden in a hot air balloon?
No, I haven't. Sounds a little scary.

{six} what was your high school mascot?
A Thunderbird.

{seven} if you had the chance to go into space, would you?
Abso-freaking-lutely! I wanted to be an astronomer, but my parents talked me out of it because it didn't make enough money. Sooo I went into social work, ha.

{eight} how often do you go dancing?
Not often, but I love to!

{nine} would you rather drive or fly?
It depends on the type of trip. Justin and I have been dreaming about doing a meandering road trip to a music festival one summer.

{ten} have you ever been caught re-gifting?
Absolutely not!

Happy Saturday!

This morning I woke up and had a lovely 5.3 mile country run in my new fancy kicks:

I've been putting off buying new running shoes because they are soooo expensive, but also because I bought my old pair when I started grad school in 2009 and have a sort of sentimental attachment to them.  I finally went to Run-On yesterday after my old tennis shoes left me nursing 4 painful blisters from a short run with my niece and nephew. Let me tell you that Lauren, who helped me at Run-On, was SO amazing!! She passed on some really great knowledge and was so sweet and helpful that I felt happy even after seeing my $130 bill. Here are a couple of tips she gave me:

1. Running shoes shouldn't tight on your foot. She said that most soccer players like myself are used to a tight fit, but that it's not good for your toes when running.

2. There should be a thumb's width between your big toes and the end of your shoe.

3. There are different levels of support with running shoes. I needed medium support, but it's based on how much your foot rolls inside or outside when you push off the ground.

4. Shoes should be replaced every 300 miles or every 4-5 months. (Ummm, this probably won't happen in my case).

5. Running shoes are a lot lighter than other shoes, and some brands claim to be running shoes, when in fact they are not good for running at all. Which was the case with my Nike Shox - Lauren told me they were too heavy, didn't bend in the middle to support my arch as I ran, and were a size too small.

See what I mean about awesome info?! She was great! So yes, this morning I woke up, went for a nice long, slow run, and finished with ZERO new blisters and ZERO knee pain. I love Lauren!!! I want to cradle her little face in my hands and tell her I love her! Okay, she might take that the wrong way... I'll just call the store and say thank you :)

P.S. The only downside to running alone in the country is that I got preoccupied with "what would happen if I got seriously injured out here?" Haha, I kept envisioning myself tripping over a rock, breaking my hip, and ending up on "I Shouldn't Be Alive" after a wolf eats my legs. That thought, along with other equally gruesome scenarios, actually made my run go by pretty fast!

Wee Bit Wednesday

{one} have you ever fainted?
Once when I was in 4th grade. Music class, as we were standing and singing. Luckily I sat down right before it happened.

{two} what is your favorite casino game?
Poker! I used to play a lot in college.

{three} do you have a good sense of direction?
YES, thank you momma!!! My dad and two sisters have the WORST sense of direction, and every time I'm a passenger in their car, I thank baby Jesus I've been blessed.

{four} laptop or desktop?
Both! I loveloveLOVE computer games (nerd alert!) which are better on desktops, but study/write better in a coffee shop on my laptop.

{five} what is your go-to hair style when having a bad hair day?
A french braid or bun.

{six} do you read the newspaper on a daily basis?
No, which is a bit embarrassing.

{seven} do you have a favorite celebrity chef?
Paula Dean, purely for entertainment value, or Ina Garten (Barefoot Contessa)

{eight} what tv show would you like to make a guest appearance on?
I agree with Steph, TRUE BLOOD! I would love to be Queen Sophie!

{nine} do you have satellite radio in your car?
Nope. On long drives I listen to audiobooks

{ten} what was the last movie that made you cry?
Honestly, I can't remember. My movie choices are pretty mindless (loved Tron!). I can say I cried during the show Wicked. It was so beautiful.

Birthday Boys

It's my brother and nephew's birthdays again, and we always celebrate together. Here are a few of my favorite shots this weekend (thank goodness for an awesome camera!):

The smiley birthday boy, my nephew Diego.

I'Olani aka tiger face.

The birthday boys, Diego and my bro. Can you tell how Doogy self-soothes?

Trampoline, beach balls, and my niece Alana.

My other niece Eva

Gorgeous girl.

This non-working cell phone was the hit of the party.

Evalu has tricks.

Lulu and her pretty eyes

My sister-in-law Steph

Eva, and the gaping hole where she knocked a tooth out.

Diego would answer the phone "hello?" then say, "ohhh mannnn!"

Tia loves you handsome!

Truth be told, I want a whole wall in my house full of candid pictures of my family. I love pictures of people being themselves - laughing, staring, napping (okay, I know that sounds creepy!), reading - so I can remember them exactly how they are when they're gone.

P.S. Sorry I've been away too long... Between preparing to go abroad, work, exercising, classes, family, and visiting Justin, I've been exhausted! I've been reading your blogs though, and I love the little peeks inside your lives. I'll give you some updates soon! xo

Spring is here, thank you baby Jesus!

I definitely not a fashionista, nor do I have a body like a model, nor do I follow trends, but that never stops me from being out-of-control excited when my catalogues from Anthropologie and Urban Outfitters come in! Another thing that keeps me from a goddess-like (not to be confused with Chuck Sheen's porn-goddesses) wardrobe? I am a grad student, saving to study abroad ($100 for vaccinations? I'll take a pair of yellow-suede wedges and wear them while I battle Malaria thank you), and broke beyond belief!

I am so in love with these catalogues because I adore Spring and everything about it - the blooming of a new year, the flowers, warm weather, reading outside, Easter, the anticipation of summer - it's all fresh and new and simply lovely. The accessories, shoes, and bags knocked my socks off (and I'm usually not into all that)! I want so much, and I want it all now, and fear I'm on the verge of a Veruca Salt meltdown if I do not get any of it.

My favs from Anthro (mind you this has been cut down dramatically, and I still can't afford any of it):

These are just perfect with any Spring outfit.

I would wear you every. single. day.

Love the cutout lace!

We both know I never wear earrings, but babies, I promise
if you find your way into my jewelry box I'll give you all the love you've ever wanted.

And my favs from UO:

I love this so much I might actually cave and buy it.
It works in India, right?
I make fun of hipsters wearing fedoras, but I love the thought of this with a mini dress and oxfords.

Love the pop of mustard
I want these so much it hurts my heart that they are $100.
Goodbye vaccinations, hello tapeworm fashionista.

Although this is a post about new items, I've been eyeing
these pretty babies for a while, and they are now ON SALE.

Sigh. I need a second job. Stripper? JOKING. I'm also loving this cover song right now (of the Rolling Stones), by my favorite bluegrass group, Old Crow Medicine Show:

"Every time you monkey child
You take my breath away
And everytime you move like that
I gotta get down and pray
Don't you know that dress of yours
Was made out of fiberglass
And everytime you move like that
I gotta go to Sunday mass
Oh, you're so down home girl"

Best Proposal Ever?

from postsecret, on facebook

In an attempt to create a healthier life for myself I've gotten back into a workout routine. Yes, I would like to lose weight, and yes I would like to be more fit, but most of all I don't want it to be another phase that I eventually drift out of.

I've always had a fairly healthy diet, but exercise often falls by the wayside when I get busy with work, school, and my long distance relationship. The other problem with working out is that I find it soooo boring! Playing soccer for almost 20 years really ruined me for anything non-competitive, and if you ask my lovely boyfriend, he'll tell you that I'm too competitive to play any sport I'm not good at. [Picture crocodile tears, pouting, frustration.... Really it's not pretty]

That being said, I have definitely found love in an early morning cycling class, and pre-workout supplement that keeps me energized throughout my workout and the rest of the day:

Yes, that's Jacked, with a 3 instead of an "e"

The name is completely ridiculous, but this stuff seriously works. I remember texting Justin, pre-Jack3d, after a couple cycling classes: "Want to puke. Call later." Ha! Now, instead of feeling worthless the rest of the day after a workout, I feel completely energized. I'm also totally focused while I'm working out, so I concentrate on my form and can keep going longer. For instance this morning I went to a cycling class, then a yoga class, and 6 hours later I still feel really great! Not cracked out or hyper, but just energized.

I've been pimping this stuff out like Jack3d is paying me, but I'm just so happy with the results. The best benefit is that it makes working out more fun. I'm energized, pushing myself during the workout, and afterwards I feel great. I think that's the key to sticking with it... enjoying what you're doing.

Oh, and props to Justin for introducing me to it, because I KNOW he wants credit ;)

My Favorite Fashionista

My good friend Adriana is amazingly fashionable, naturally gorgeous, impeccably artsy, and a genuinely sweet person. Going by looks and style, she would be the girl you're crazy jealous of - except she's your best friend and you can't get enough of her sweet heart.

I mean, really? Gorgeous.

True to form, Adriana is also a very clever writer, as seen in her new fashion blog: LeftOnBoise. Her post about Anthropologie's sister line BHLDN, still has me dreaming about a beautiful garden wedding and beaded bridal gloves.

I'll take all three.

I definitely read her blog every. single. day. because I love her sense of fashion, and her clever writing style. You should check it out!

Adri and her husband Mario, in China

Also, did I mention her and her hubby ALWAYS have the best Halloween costumes???? They are incredible!

YIKES! and AWESOME! At the same time!

Music Shuffle

Thanks to Justin and Micaela, I'm so excited to shuffle my itunes folder and and see what music pops up. Like I'm sure everyone who has done this before me, I hope nothing too embarrassing finds it's way on this list.

1. The Runner - Kings of Leon
2. Tattoo - Joseph Arthur (reminds me of my time in Brooklyn)
3. Pickup Truck - Kings of Leon
4. Overprotected - Britney Spears
5. Come on Over Baby - Christina Aguilera (hello embarrassment!)
6. Thinking About You - Norah Jones
7. Sunrise - Norah Jones
8. Black Balloon - Goo Goo Dolls
9. Photograph - Weezer
10. Edge of Town - Ghostland Observatory (AMAZING band! synth beats are the way to my heart)
11. Wagon Wheel - Old Crow Medicine Show (one of my favorite songs ever, by one of my favorite bands.... and my good friend's wedding song)
12. Everywhere - Tim McGraw
13. More Than Human - White Zombie (awkward!)
14. 9 Crimes - Damien Rice
15. Human - The Killers
16. Because of You - Kelly Clarkson
17. Infra-Red - Placebo
18. My Hero - Foo Fighters
19. Zelda Theme - Deadmau5
20. Mi Amigo - Kings of Leon
21. The Reward is Cheese - Deadmau5
22. Perfume - Damien Rice
23. Minglewood Blues - Old Crow Medicine Show
24. Nothin' Better To Do - Leanne Rhimes
25. Oxford Comma - Vampire Weekend (LOVED watching this band live at ACL!)

I have so many other bands I love, but for some reason the same ones kept popping up. Some of the more pop oriented songs I listen to while working out, and Deadmau5 is awesome for keeping a steady pace!

I don't like paying money for music (as cheap as that sounds), so I love listening to Pandora to discover new bands, and Grooveshark when I want to listen to one band's entire collection.

February Happiness

I am so happy today, I could just burst into a cloud of floating hearts. Yes I know that sounds ridiculous, but it's true. I had such a fantastic Valentine's Day, followed tonight by the BEST birthday surprise! First my lovely Valentine's Day...

I'm such an affectionate person, and have always loved Valentine's Day. Sure, I went through a trendy phase of telling people I hated it, but even then I would run home from school to find a Valentine from my daddy, along with a box of chocolates. Nothing has changed:
"To: Katie From: A Secret Admirer" in my dad's impeccable handwriting

This completely made my day, just as it always has. My dad is not one to make sweet gestures all the time, so these special presents mean the world to me. Added to that was the amazing mixed CD (my favorite present to receive!) from Justin, along with this beautiful card:

She said: "We'll never be more than friends"
He said: "I'm going down there to win her heart"

I teared up when I read those quotes, because they are both things we said the day before we met for the first time. After years of talking on the phone, fighting, then not speaking for months, I told him I'd never want to to date him and we could only be friends. He told his sister he was coming to Austin to win my heart, and he absolutely did. That time seems like another life, somewhere in the distant past, and it always reminds me of how far we've come.

So, what could top those sweet tokens of amour? Today, after a brutal spin class, I arrived home to a big envelope from Stub Hub. I had no clue what was in there, wasn't particularly interested in it. Then, to my total surprise, when I opened it I found two tickets to WICKED, my all-time FAVORITE Broadway Show!! Not only am I seeing Wicked next weekend, I'm seeing at it the historic Majestic Theater:

We'll be on the right, towards the front!

The Majestic Theater is seriously gorgeous inside. The ceiling is blue like the sky, with little lights that look like stars. What makes this even better?? Justin is just as excited as I am to see it! I can't tell you how wonderful it is to have someone that appreciates art as much as I do.

His idea for this weekend? Going to the market to find cheap art. LOVE. lovelovelove.

A day in Austin

I'm so happy to live so close to my brother, his wife, and their kids. I LOVE them. Yesterday they needed a babysitter so I drove to Austin to hang out with my nephew Diego for the day. Here's some of my favorite pics:

Inside the Capital building. My brother was the project manager on all the renovations, and said he had to climb to the top

My big brother and Diego

Outside on the lawn.

With Austin in the background.

Hel-lo sweetface!

I told him to make a sad face... so cute!
(Notice the Dumber and Dumber haircut... my sister in law tried to cut his hair haha)

Best smile in the world!

My niece Eva

Gorgeous girl!
